With the introduction of scrapped dry cleaning machines, which were banned in Europe because they do not provide sufficient chemical absorption, to the Turkish market, dry cleaning under the stairs increased rapidly. Experts emphasized that dry cleaning with these machines causes cancer risk along with many skin and respiratory diseases.
The fact that dry cleaning, which is preferred and frequently used by everyone from employees to housewives, is done with machines that do not provide sufficient chemical absorption causes health problems. It was pointed out that it invites many serious diseases, especially skin problems, respiratory tract diseases and cancer. It has been stated that although the state prevents it from being brought into Turkey today, the dry cleaning machines brought before and in places that provide anonymous service threaten health. Fatih Avşar, Chairman of Dry Clean Express, gave information about how dry cleaning is done and its effects on health.
Stating that the dry cleaning under the stairs is done with poison, Avşar said, “The machines used in the dry cleaning places under the stairs; While it causes the dirt taken from one garment to be added to the next dirt, it can cause allergies and many skin problems, as well as diseases up to cancer. Dry cleaning process is done with a special chemical called “Perchlorethylene”, which is poisonous and dangerous. This chemical must be completely free from the clothes after the cleaning process. However, despite the prohibition of its use, after the dry cleaning process with machines used under the stairs, the toxic chemical cannot be sufficiently purified from the clothes. As a result of incomplete chemical absorption, this poison; It is located on the clothing as a transparent layer that cannot be seen with the naked eye.” said.

On how to understand a healthy dry cleaning service, Fatih Avşar said, “After the dry cleaning carried out with machines that cannot absorb adequately, the body absorbs the poison like a sponge when it comes into contact with the clothes and causes diseases. You can determine whether a healthy dry cleaning service is received by smelling the garment. If your clothing has a heavy chemical odor, perchlorethylene material has not been fully absorbed from your clothing. In this case, it is unfortunately not possible to talk about a healthy dry cleaning process and it is a sign of danger.” he said.
“IN TURKEY, THE DRY CLEANING INDUSTRY HAS NO QUALITY STANDARD”
Stating that there is no quality standard in the dry cleaning sector in Turkey, Avşar said, “For the last one and a half years in Turkey, attempts have been made to finish dry cleaning under the stairs with the intervention of the state. However, institutions as well as the state should pay attention to a quality and healthy dry cleaning service and ensure that a standard is formed. It should not serve and endanger human health without completing the necessary infrastructure and equipment.” he said.
